Insidious: A Frightfully Freaky Friday Night

You can count on me to review scary movies. Consider it my niche. Here's one worth the worry. Friday night I saw Insidious and was thoroughly impressed — as were my scary movie buff buddies who gripped the seat with me. Insidious means "Proceeding in a gradual, subtle way, but with harmful effects" and there couldn't be a better name for this movie. From the opening credits it has a camp element, then it can best be described as Poltergeist meets Paranormal Activity meets Susperia. The premise is simple enough: A family finds their world (and houses) turned upside down when one of their sons falls into a coma, unexplainables ensue. The cast is likeable enough; male lead Patrick Wilson has luscious lips, Barbara Hershey is as freaky as ever, and Lin Shaye is always appreciated (Detroit Rock City!). Concise cinematography adds to the artsy allure. And the best part of any good scary movie? Just when you think it's over it takes you on another thrill.

New Noise From The Beastie Boys

A few weeks ago, while driving to Tahoe, a fellow Beastie Girl and I were wondering: What's up with the Beastie Boys? Who doesn't want to know what's going on with the Triple Trouble? Allow us to tell you The Update...

Their last tour was canceled, and last album delayed, due to MCA (Adam Yauch)'s unfortunate news of cancer. We're happy to report that MCA lost his license to ill and their new album 'Hot Sauce Committee, Pt. 2' will debut May 3. The original release date was September 15, '09, under the title 'Hot Sauce Committee, Pt. 1'. "It’s a combination of playing and sampling stuff as we’re playing, and also sampling pretty obscure records. There are a lot of songs on the record and there are a lot of short songs and they kind of all run into each other" explained MCA. Needless to say, we're excited 'cause life ain't nothing but a good groove, a good mix tape to put you in the right mood...

Lucky for fans, the innovators have tapped into social media. On their blog, (www.beastieboys.com), you can see daily musings from each of the Boys. Like, how else would we have known Mike D. was just on a surf trip in Puerto Rico? And check Adrock's awesome NYC/Japan tribute photo. The B-Boyz are also Makin' With the Freak Freak on Twitter — 88,048 followers and counting. MCA wrote and directed a 30-minute must-see short film called Fight for Your Right Revisited that debuted at Sundance and features endless random cameos. But to keep your Body Movin', here's the first release from Hot Sauce Committee, Pt. 2 aptly called 'Make Some Noise.' It's thumpin', bumpin', it's new noise from the Beastie Boys!

Katchafire Double Double

I'm in a funk. So I need some funk. Or rather, some reggae. It looks like my next surf trip will have to wait, so the next best thing is a reggae show. The Independent hosts some of the best and next week they have two Katchafire shows (Tuesday 3/29 and Wednesday 3/30) where you can let loose to the sweet sounds of these Kiwi boys. They have a new album releasing soon — here's some classic stuff. Cut a reggae rug next week, the dance floor may look a little something like this...

You love stargazing but the rain has (star)ted again.  Or maybe it's an afternoon and you want to see what's going on up there tonight. I have the solution. It doesn't matter if your computer is Windows, Apple, or Linux...you can download Stellarium's open source software and explore the nighttime sky. Pick your city, a city on the other side of the globe (or even Mars), and see what the nighttime sky is like for a Parisian, an Ethiopian, or a penguin in Antarctica.

I feel a new wave coming on. And the only defense is dance. This Friday night (3/4) at Cafe du Nord, Depeche Mode and Erasure cover bands are lined up. For a mere $10, we can spaz out to modern rock tunes. I've never seen either cover band, and yet I always rock out to both original bands in my car. Strangelove will hopefully deliver some Personal Jesus, Just Can't Get Enough, oh! and maybe even But Not Tonight, while I would hope for Chains of Love, A Little Respect and Stop! from Erasure-Esque. Ready to cut some rug? Here's "But Not Tonight" for a morsel of mid-day modern rock.

Oscars Prep: Revisiting the Creepy "The Social Network" Trailer

If you've spent the last week (like I have) listening to Radiohead's new album, King of Limbs, then you'll certainly appreciate another look at The Social Network trailer, just in time for the Oscars on Sunday. It's the haunting cover of "Creep" from by Scala & Kolacny Brothers — a Belgian girls' choir — that really nails it. Right now, The King's Speech is favored to win Best Picture on Sunday, but considering the influence of Facebook on all of our lives, perhaps The Social Network could pull off an upset?

Matthew Williamson Sounds Off

While Radiohead's new album is perfect for rainy days, British designer Matthew Williamson's is ideal for the runway. In time for London Fashion Week (Matthew showed his artsy Russian collection yesterday) one of my favorite designers decided to share his own strutting stuff with a collection of rock and pop tunes. From The Temper Trap to Santigold to Brazilian Girls to Passion Pit — here's the track list — it's no doubt upbeat and eclectic, just like MW's clothes. You can enter to win one by emailing facebook@net-a-porter.com and sharing which song you'd like to walk down the runway to — enter by 5pm Wednesday, 2/23. Toughie, I'm going to go with Muse's "Plug in Baby" because it makes me go a little crazy. Or, you can pre-order the album (release is 2/28) for about $13.
